Behind the Signs
Sign structure engineers work behind the scenes. "Our job is to determine how to support a sign in its final location. If a building can't support a sign, we'll create a new structure that will," says company president, R. Scott Lewis.
Every project offers new challenges and constraints. Lewis and company work to meet the rigorous requirements of sign owners, architects, owners, engineers, sign manufacturers, and permit issuers. There are environmental factors such as wind and soil density. There are load and material considerations. Plus, there is the challenge of fastening signs in ways that are both structurally sound and visually appealing. What's behind a sign is as important as the message it delivers.

R. Scott Lewis, President
R. Scott Lewis has worked as a structural engineer for over 30 years. In the early '90's, Mr. Lewis seized the opportunity to work with one of the most well respected structural engineers in the area, Eugene Avallone PE, PC. During that time, Lewis immersed himself in the design of efficient and durable structures for signage and outdoor advertising. He took over the business for the retiring Avallone one year later, founding R. Scott Lewis PE, PC in 1991.
Mr. Lewis graduated cum laude from Yale University with an undergraduate degree in engineering mechanics. He earned his MS degree in civil engineering from MIT and, most recently, his MBA from New York University. He is licensed as a professional engineer in NY, NJ, CT, MA, and PA and has been a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers since 1975.
